HISTORY ____________________
Tamiment was a 2,200-acre resort that began operations in 1921 as the People's Educational Camp Society. Its roots are in the American labor movement, and it originated as a vacation retreat for members of the Waistmakers Union of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, who purchased land in 1919. It became a well-known gathering for retreats for intellectuals and academics to discuss culture and other subjects. Guest lecturers included historians such as Will Durant, who staged their own theatrical experiments. In the 1930's, deans of Ivy League colleges gathered to plan the future of higher education in the United States.
During the 1940's and later, Tamiment became a well-known resort and entertainment center. It regularly featured entertainers Imogene Coca, Carol Burnett, Woody Allen, Shelly Berman, Joey Bishop, along with scores of other stars. Danny Kaye was the star most closely associated with Tamiment, which for years was the site of the annual Danny Kaye golf tournament.
Exceptional among Pocono resorts for its architectural design and natural beauty, Tamiment's buildings were constructed of local stone and wood by craftsmen. Their directive was to not "offend a tree or a chipmunk."
Tamiment included a one-mile lake and the 7,110-yard golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The course was considered among the most challenging in the United States and among the top courses in Pennsylvania.
